Chapter 10

Dom cursed himself a million ways to Sunday before turning to look at the jerk who had a gun pressed to his side. He kept his movements slow, his hands firmly on the motorcycle’s handlebars, as he took in one of the goons from earlier that day outside Lone Wolf’s house.

“Well, what have we here? You guys sure are spending an awful lot of time keeping an eye on me. Your boss give you the orders to play babysitter?”

The barb appeared to meet its desired mark; the weapon at his back was dropped. “We ain’t no babysitters.”

“Could have fooled me.”

“You’re a party of interest.” The one with the unlocked gun made a show of putting the safety back on. “That’s all.”

“Because I’m marrying the boss’s daughter.”

“Because the boss don’t like lying weasels.”

“What am I lying about?”

The goon who’d already popped the safety back on used the tip of his gun to tap at Dom’s forearm, clearly focused on something beneath his jacket sleeve. “The tat you’re sporting says you’ve done the work. Boss isn’t so sure.”

“If he’s so concerned about it, why doesn’t he ask me himself? I already volunteered for duty.”

That tidbit seemed to catch both of Evans’s thugs off guard. The one who’d stood behind him came around to face Dom from the front of the motorcycle. “Volunteered?”

“Yeah.” Dom shrugged, playing it casual but intrigued by the obvious lack of detail Evans had shared with his henchmen. “I’m marrying in. I want to give my time to the family business. Spending my days walking around on people’s roofs isn’t a hell of a lot of fun. And drywalling in the summer’s like working in hell.”

The bigger of the two laughed. “Did a few summers working construction when I was a kid. It sucked.”

Dom stared the guy down, then the other one. “You let Lone Wolf know you paid me a visit and that I’m all in, just like I told him today.”

The other thug brightened with an idea before his gaze turned dark. “Who were you in the bar with?”

Dom considered how to play it, knowing he could still fall back on the lawyer angle, but curious if they’d cased the bar or not. He didn’t recall seeing them inside and there was no reason to overplay his hand and lead on he was with someone if they hadn’t noticed.

“Myself.”

“Why you doing that when you have a sweet fiancée at home?”

He hunched his shoulders but shot a dark look at the question. “Why do you care?”

“Just asking.”

“I’ve got business in town and I needed to see to a few of my interests.”

“Boss isn’t gonna like it if you’re two-timing his daughter. Or two-timing his business, either.”

Dom sensed the man’s interest—and his eagerness to trip up the boss’s future son-in-law with whatever he could find. It was yet another show of the hand and more insight into what Evans did—and didn’t—share with his employees. He puffed up his chest and moved a few steps closer. “I got nothing of interest that’ll affect him.
